Countries At Risk

The bacteria can be found worldwide however a majority of tetanus cases occurs in countries where there is not a suitable vaccination programme such as China, India, Africa and in certain South American countries.

Travel Precautions

Tetanus is often linked to rusty nails, although the bacteria can enter the body through various types of wounds. Rusty nails, however, are a common entry point as they create an ideal environment for the bacteria. Be sure to seek immediate medical attention if you sustain any injuries or accidents while traveling.

Signs & Symptoms

Tetanus symptoms can take up to 3 weeks to appear. The first sign is usually muscle stiffness in the jaw (known as lockjaw), which then spreads to the neck and other limbs. This can lead to difficulties with swallowing and other complications.

The Vaccination

The childhood vaccination program includes vaccines for Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio. After completing the initial series, travelers should receive a booster every 10 years if they plan to visit higher-risk areas.
