Countries At Risk
Hepatitis B occurs worldwide but higher risk areas include Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, South and Central America.
Travel Precautions
The risk to short-term travelers is generally low, but the likelihood of infection depends on the activities and behaviors while traveling. Those seeking medical or dental treatment, acupuncture, piercings, or tattoos are at an increased risk. Additionally, travelers engaging in contact sports are also at higher risk.
Signs & Symptoms
Individuals infected with Hepatitis B may experience flu-like symptoms, including fatigue, body aches, fever, and headaches. The virus can also affect the liver, potentially leading to jaundice, which causes yellowing of the skin and eyes.
The Vaccination
The Hepatitis B vaccination consists of three doses, typically administered over a 6-month period. However, it can also be given as an accelerated course over 1 month, with a booster shot administered one year later.
