Countries At Risk
Due to the way in which the disease is spread, typhoid is mainly found in countries where sanitation levels are poor and there is a limited supply to clean water. The disease is widespread in much of the world including Africa, South East Asia, Central Asia and Central & South America.
Travel Precautions
Drink only from a sealed water bottle or water that has been boiled. Avoid ice and salads washed with tap water. Eat only fruit that can be peeled, and steer clear of uncooked foods. Make sure all food is freshly cooked and served piping hot.
Signs & Symptoms
The most common symptoms of typhoid include a high fever, stomach pain, headache, and either constipation or diarrhea. If left untreated, these symptoms can worsen, increasing the risk of the disease becoming fatal.
The Vaccination
Travelers heading to high-risk countries are advised to get a typhoid vaccination. The vaccine can be administered either orally (as a course of 3 capsules) or via injection. The oral vaccine is about 80% as effective as the injection and is recommended for those who cannot receive the injection. The typhoid injection remains effective for up to 3 years.
